Collaborative Research Project: Innovation research on the feeding value of cereal grains and its improvement - GrainUp
Researchers from the fields of animal nutrition and plant breeding worked together on innovation of the feeding value of cereal grains and its improvement in the collaborative GrainUp project. The project started in Februrary 2011 and ended officially in December 2016. Objectives were to characterize the nutritional value of the current cereal grains with innovative methods in animal experiments and to develop comprehensive and rapid methods for the assessment of grain quality in both feed industry and plant breeding. In addition, effects of feed processing on animal health and impacts of climate change on the quality of grains were investigated. The studies significantly contributed to a more efficient use of energy, protein and phosphorus from cereal grains and a reduced excretion of environmentally relevant substances.

The support of the research project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) under the program for innovation support. A quarter of that amount was provided by private sector companies.
